iGoogle - Organize your homepage [Idea]

Probably the main thing that keeps me organized and sane on a daily basis is my iGoogle page, or portal to the Internet.  Lots of people already use something like this through Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, or even AOL (or others), but I personally prefer iGoogle because of the flexibility and how it ties into other Google products easily.

What does it do: this lets you put everything in one place when you get online so you do not have to go to multiple sources for information.

How does it do it: again, using the magic of RSS and other web technologies, homepages or “portals” like iGoogle are possible.  RSS information is shared in a standard format that allows other pages to use the content.  Information from a blog, a news website, your email, and more can all be in one place.

How much does it cost: free.  Simple.

What is on my homepage(s): (oh yeah, you can have tabs with multiple home pages to categorize them like work and personal for example) I have just about everything on my homepage, but here are a few things: bookmarks (in case I am not at my own computer and need to get to some bookmarks), Gmail (a quick look at new emails), stock market quotes (up to the minute quotes from Google Finance), Google tasks (quick list of things I need to do), On Organization RSS feed (to check out my blog postings and when they are available on the feed), quote of the day (always fun), tech news (build in feed from Google), Google Reader (shortcut to seeing top feeds in my reader), and weather (again, through Google using Weather Underground).  Just from reading that you can see how it is great to get all the information in one place instead of having to go to all those different websites to see what I want.  When I am ready, I can look at all my emails in Gmail or look at detailed weather.  I will go over to Google Reader to look at all the postings and to Google Finance to get more details on the stock market.

I think that this is such a great product and something that anyone who is online should use.  The “gadgets” you can put on your homepage are endless, and if you are really creative, you can even create your own.

Do you use iGoogle or something like it?  Share your story for others to read.

GTD part 1 - A 12 Step Program for the Disorganized

“Hello, my name is Canyon and I’m a Disorganized Mess.”

Saying that “the first step is admitting you have a problem and are powerless over it” may sound familiar to many. I feel I had to go further than that to accept that I needed help with my personal organization. I was drowning in “Stuff” and the cracks that stuff were slipping through had become gaping holes. I eventually found GTD and it saved me from my self inflicted chaos. For this first post I want to give an overview of the GTD system. Next post I’ll cover my own implementation and some of the key realizations I’ve had about the GTD methodology.

Ladies - Do You Have A Morning Routine? [Opinion]

Are You FRAZZLED in the Morning?  Try this Routine to SAVE You Time!

Mornings used to be a disaster for me. It seemed as though every time I turned around the clock had surged into fast-forward mode and I was left with little to no time to get my make-up on and get out the door. I finally grew sick of the anxiety this was causing me and devised a routine that has made my mornings more enjoyable and efficient. First trick - get to bed at a decent hour! I know, it can be more than difficult to achieve this, but part of looking good is getting that beauty sleep. Secondly, wake up on-time. If you hit the snooze button 3 or 4 times (like we all love to do) you’re causing your own problems in the morning. So, after you wake up, immediately get a fresh glass of water and down it (with your vitamins!). Prepare your breakfast - I love instant oatmeal or make some scrambled eggs the night before for the next few days and you’ll have breakfast ready. Add some toast with almond butter and your favorite cup of joe (or juice) and you’re set in the nutrition department.

Wedding Organization from an Expert

Hello Cyberspace, welcome to My First Blog Post Ever.  I am honored to have been invited to participate in the “On Organization” blog and consider it quite a compliment to be asked to contribute to a blog with the theme of Organization.  I consider myself a natural organizer… I am addicted to my dayplanner, wireless device, and routines!  I am lucky to have a career that I absolutely love — I am Owner and Wedding & Event Coordinator for Bliss Events in San Diego, California (www.blissevent.com).  My job requires a very high level of organization and attention to detail.

I thought my first blog post should be about what I do each and every day…. wedding planning!  Here are the first few steps in wedding planning.  Once a Bride & Groom get these major tasks done, they are ready to move on to the more detailed parts of wedding planning:

  1. Create, revise, and finalize Guest List.  Get input from both of your parents in order to get an accurate count.
  2. Set an overall wedding budget.  What exactly does this include or not include?  (i.e. does it not include your rings, honeymoon, rehearsal dinner, etc.?)
  3. Pick some date options…. ideally you can be open-minded about the date, having 3-5 options… this will make your “venue hunt” much easier if you are flexible with your wedding date.
  4. Determine what your priorities are - this will help you allot your overall budget.  Make an actual list so you can see what is #1, #2,#3, etc.  (Is photography the most important thing to you?  Do you have to have live music, a large band with all the bells & whistles?  Is decor and florals top on your list?)  This “priorities list” is the order in which you should start to book your vendors.  That way, if you splurge on #1 and #2, you can take money away from the lower-ranked priorities and still stay on-budget.

…. And that is all the wisdom I am going to share for now!  Look for future posts from me on weddings and other life-organization subjects.

[Idea] 8 Tips For Helping You Get Organized

Here are some tips I read in my local “CitiScapes” magazine.  Add these basic tasks to your everyday routine and you’ll be thinking like an organizer in no time

  1. Make your bed every day - With a partner, it’s even four times faster.  Make it part of your children’s routine as well.  The bed is the first thing we see when entering a bedroom, and an unmade bed plays psychological havoc on our peace of mind.  It’s an excellent way to train children to love order while they’re young.
  2. Do one load of laundry every day - This adds only a few minutes to your daily routine, leaving your weekend free of that mountain of dirty laundry. Read the rest of this entry »

[Opinion] To be organized. Nature vs. Nurture

Nature vs. Nurture definition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nature_versus_nurture):

The nature versus nurture debates concern the relative importance of an individual’s innate qualities (”nature”) versus personal experiences (”nurture”) in determining or causing individual differences in physical and behavioral traits.

The question relating to On Organization is: Does a person become organized and task oriented because of innate qualities or because of personal experiences.  Basically, can someone teach themselves to be organized or will a disorganized person just always be that way?
